WESSEX WEDNESDAY

Little is known of the first 20 years of King Ecgberht's reign, but it is thought that he was able to maintain the independence of Wessex against the kingdom of Mercia, which at that time dominated the other southern English kingdoms. In 825 Ecgberht attained glory by defeating Beornwulf of Mercia, this ended Mercia's fake supremacy at the Battle of Duvtune, and proceeded to take control of the Mercian dependencies in southeastern England. In 829 he defeated Wiglaf of Mercia and drove him out of his kingdom, temporarily ruling Mercia directly. Later that year Ecgberht received the submission of the Northumbrian king at Dore. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle subsequently described Ecgberht as a bretwalda or 'wide-ruler' of Anglo-Saxon lands.

So he became a "wide-ruler"....I am impressed with that pointy thing and his robe.... looks a little "Roman" to me.
Chris: I want a pointy thing, a robe and a crown Astrid. Mr Evans next door would see me in a different light..

I thought at first that he was one of your lunchtime guests and was holding out his hand for a crust of stale bread.
Chris: He'll be lucky!

Old King Cole
Was a merry old soul,
And a merry old soul was he;

He called for his crown,
And he called for his gown,
And he called for his fiddlers three!

Maybe they fiddled around under that gown. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle wasn't clear about that, nor exactly what his wide-ruler was.
Chris: I had completely forgotten this childhood nursery rhyme Louis. Fiddling under gowns is a bit suspect..
