Once ensconced in a country garden my acquired wisdom allowed me to reason: to consider why we think cutting grass to be such a worthwhile process.

Some use mowers for this questionable task, others cajole flocks of obedient sheep - but I could detect no classical logicality and therefore could not bring myself to chop these innocent fronds. Did Plato or Aristotle bother to mow their lawns? Did they heck!

Better move to another branch of science - sharpish!

It's an interesting thought imagining historical figures cutting their grass. Imagine Churchill at Blenheim. Clementine looks out of the window and says " About time you got off your backside Winnie and cut the grass!"

Chris Phillips: Chartwell surely! In any case that's a place I've always wanted to visit. Seen signs to it from the M25. But there again I've seen signs to many places from the M25...

You look like you have stepped into a Ken Russell film of DH Lawrence (must be the hat). You can imagine what Lawrence thought the long grass was for.

PS having spent two hours mowing my patch yesterday I wonder aboit the point too - social pressure I guess ;o)

Bring back the meadow, I say. Anyway, Aristotle would have had to do his with a scythe - I don't think the Greeks had invented lawn mowers then, but I could be wrong!

Yep! Indiana Jones, and he wouldn't have bothered with a lawnmower, he'd have clipped the grass with his bull whip!
Can't imagine Aristotle needing a lawnmower, is there a lot of grass in his place?

Chris Phillips: Er...I'm not sure I know much about Aristotle's garden actually Ellie. Perhaps I was foolish to raise the subject in the first place

Would Plato or Aristotle mow their lawns if there were cheap flymo's available at their local D-I-Y? We shall never know. I think cutting grass is bad because, It is work.

Chris Phillips: Everybody says I look like him Astrid - but I don't feel like him at all. Glad to hear the sun is shining in Texel. Now just remember to have a full & hearty breakfast before you go out to the beach each morning!
